Comprised of moments from over 46 films shot in Seattle, and a few irresistible facsimiles, Once Upon a Time in Seattle is part love letter, part loony action adventure, and part free-associative meditation on the transience of landscape in a city that has always had a complicated relationship with honoring its past while moving swiftly (recklessly?) into the future. There is no linear narrative, and dialogue is kept to a minimum. The city itself is both location and protagonist, while the function of the human characters, or perhaps more accurately, ciphers, is that of a vessel to move us through the city and occasionally offer loose context or comic relief. No single existing shot or sequence is sustained longer than a minute, with most individual shots lasting less than 20 seconds, and over half clocking in at 5 seconds or less.
